#1 Posted: 7/6/2012 4:12:59 PM I took my son to the pool this morning at around 10am. We stayed for about 90 min until I agreed that instead of eating lunch, I would take him out for some ice cream. I put him in his car seat and then popped the trunk to put his swim toys in there. As I was walking to my seat, I stopped to let out a big sneeze. I covered my nose and felt something scrape on the inside of my nose. It hit my hand and then fell to the pavement below me. My nose started bleeding profusely and I knelt down to see what it was that just cut my fuckin nose. I picked it up and it was a small, rough edged piece of shrapnel. Rustic looking piece of metal with some faily sharp edges.
Was hit by an IED in 2005. Deployed twice since then and saw basically nothing except for a bunch of cups of coffee and powerpoint slides. The IED that hit me put a bunch of small pieces of shrapnel into my neck/shoulder-blade area. Never once have experienced any weird pain or headaches as a result of that blast. Been 100% fine actually.
Popped the trunk again and found an old t-shirt and used it to stop the bleeding. I can feel a cut on the inside of my nose but its pretty far in there. It's scary and annoying at the same time. How is this possible? |

#2 Posted: 7/6/2012 4:16:34 PM When I got home, I put the little metal thing in my cup holder in the other car (my car). Not telling the wife but my son did open the door and say "Mom! Dad nose bleeding!" Not going to tell her what happened for now. No need to worry. Despite the fact that I'm sure this is not ordinary, I still think it's fine. |

#5 Posted: 7/6/2012 4:24:31 PM How can this be medically possible? It sat where it sat for years and years and you never had any other symptoms? Seems impossible. |

#6 Posted: 7/6/2012 4:27:37 PM I called my friend who is a former Army Ranger (got out of the Army in 2007). He was discharged medically after a tour in Afghanistan. He chuckled when I told him. Said "just relax" and that while he has not seen it happen, he did hear about it happening with friends while he was at Walter Reed. Said the weird part is that it took 7 years to come out. Told me to have a drink and relax. |

#7 Posted: 7/6/2012 4:29:34 PM Hutch,
Thats what I was telling myself in the car ride on the way home. I've been google-ing it for a couple of hours. Does seem real improbable. I'm going to try and upload a pic of the metal piece. Ran it under hot water, cleaned it off. |

#10 Posted: 7/6/2012 4:55:23 PM All this time did you have any nasal symptoms, smelly discharge from that nostril intermittently over the years. Would have expected a foreign body in the nostril to have caused a discharge.

#12 Posted: 7/6/2012 4:59:34 PM young children often present with months of smelly green discharge from one nostril, and that's the clue, that there is a foreign body-unilateral discharge. Then what you find is the child has a bead that it shoved up a nostril months ago and now presents as smelly discharge.

If this thing was still in you, it had to be in your nose. There is noway it could pass through your airway and then out your nose. It's not like it was a small plastic piece.....it was jagged metal. It certainly couldn't have been in your lung....or your esophagus. I honestly don't see how this could happen. |

post 10 and 12 follow
just asked if you had discharge from a nostril, because foreign bodies cause discharge and mostly seen in children who shove bead or small button up nostril, did not even know you had children, so not sure what you are getting upset about

#18 Posted: 7/6/2012 5:21:35 PM Just the piece of metal that went flying out of my nostril when I sneezed. Other than that, no. I rarely get sick, the marks on my neck are visible only if you look very close. |

a new word is indeed required
and the case could really be wrote up in a medical journal, it is so unusual, it should be documented

#24 Posted: 7/6/2012 5:58:41 PM you should definitely get that checked out. If one piece got in there then you may have more. Hate to see those other ones migrate into your sinuses or worse.
Simple image should be able to detect anything else....or else just head to your local high school and have them use the metal detector on your face. :P
Thanks for your servicve man!!!
A fire guy went off about 10 feet from me the other night....didn't see the kids in the dark and I was startled. Can't imagine what an IED would be like.
