Disclaimer- If you have no interest in the Twins, and the Joe Mauer situation, please do not read my preamble below- it's just me venting about a sore spot that gets brought up quite often
I really think the Twins should trade him (of course they will have to absorb some of his salary, as no team would take on his $23m), but it might be a good restart for him somewhere else, and it would free up some Cap space to get the Twins another decent pitcher they would need if they were to make a run in the Play Offs.
People talk about his "No Trade Clause", which doesn't even exist. What does exist is his 10-5 qualification that allows him to turn down trades, or specify where he would go, but since both he and his wife are from St. Paul, and they just had daughters they want to raise around the other relatives, I don't think he's moving anywhere.
If he truly cared about winning a W.S. and the current Twins team doing it, he would restructure his Contract to free up Cap space to bring in a Player(s) the team needs to make a deep run. Of course, like all other greedy Professional Athletes- that's not gonna happen.
The other problem I have with him, is with his tenure, skills and leadership ability, it seems like he just doesn't care. He doesn't want to assume the leadership role on the field, or in the clubhouse (and even less so now that he's not calling games behind the plate)
I could continue to ramble as I'm pizzed about the whole situation, but 99% here probably don't care. I just wanted to address it, since it comes up time and again.
So after going full circle here, it looks like Twins are stuck w/ Mauer and his Contract, and because we don't have a decent 1-2 Pitching punch, we will not see another W.S. in the forseeable future
