Great move for the Mariners. They need a power bat and Cruz is a power bat. He proved he could come back after the suspension and now the only question is can he stay healthy.
For someone who produced like he did last season and the money being thrown around these days...this is a bargain.

Could be one of the final pieces to the puzzle for the Mariners. People that don't know climatic conditions and ballparks will always criticize the Mariners offense, but they only have to have enough to win 3-2 at home or on the road in their division. East of the Rockies they have plenty of offense and Cruz will add to that. The A.L. West could remain the best division in baseball for several years. The A's won't go away, the Astros are coming along nicely and the Rangers will spend enough to overcome their problems. Pandemonium.
Now and then even a BLIND squirrel can find an acorn

.234/.309/.440 Cruz's Career Numbers in Safeco National Park in 204 Plate Appearances.
This is a guy turning 35 in July whose outstanding defensive play makes him a positive defensive war at DH.
I don't see this one working out well and I think that is the reason 4/57 from a team starving for another big bat was the best offer that he could get. Time will tell of course but I think the bottom is getting ready to fall out for Mr. Cruz.

Is anyone surprised that Cruz had a career year in a contract season? I bet he misses at least 50 games with random injuries this season, and struggles to reach 20 homeruns. Fat and happy with paycheck.

Umm is Safeco Field not a retractable roof stadium?

He is referring to the atmospheric conditions. Couple that with the size of the park and Safeco is in the bottom 5 almost every year as far as ballpark factors for hitting. The was an aberration year a couple years back but it is a hugely favorable park to the pitchers because the ball just doesn't travel there very well at all.

"People that don't know climatic conditions and ballparks will always criticize the Mariners offense". Thanks Tiger for trying to explain that. The reality is that Safeco was the best pitchers park last year and Angels Stadium was second. West Coast parks always lead the way. If a hitter's overall stats drop by 10 to 15% with a west coast home park instead of east coast he is essentially doing the same job and doing it just as well. Cruz is going from the great hitter's park at Camden Yards to the worst in baseball, so a drop in overall stats may not mean what a lot of folks think it means.

I've been to games at safeco field, albeit later in the year and the ball traveled good. I'm from San Diego and attend many Angels and Padres games. The ball travels way better in Angels stadium, but it's dimensions hurt hitters a little. As for the Padres and Petco Park, they have moved in the fences already and it failed to produce a significant advantage for hitters. The ball @ Petco dies early in the season and doesn't get much better late in the year.
So, with Nelson and his signing with the M's, what do we expect? Well, an aging hitter some much needed pop. It's logical to believe that he is hard pressed to numbers similar to that when he played in Texas. Last years numbers? Forget about it...
