The Detroit Red Wings will name Jeff Blashill as their coach next week, MLive.com reported Wednesday.
Blashill, coach of Detroit's American Hockey League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins, led them to the Calder Cup in 2013 and to the playoffs in each of his three seasons behind the bench. Grand Rapids was eliminated by the Utica Comets in the Western Conference Finals on Tuesday, and exit meetings are scheduled for Monday. There will be a press conference at Joe Louis Arena to announce the hiring, the website said, citing an unidentified source.
General manager Ken Holland met with Blashill last month but did not want to make anything official until the Griffins' playoff run ended, MLive.com reported. Holland is attending the NHL Scouting Combine in Buffalo this week and is slated to attend the general managers' meetings in Chicago early next week.
Blashill, 41, would replace Mike Babcock, who became coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs on May 20, soon after the Red Wings were defeated by the Tampa Bay Lightning in seven games in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Blashill was an assistant coach in Detroit before becoming the coach of Grand Rapids in 2012. He has a 134-71-23 record with the Griffins and has coached a number of the players on Detroit's current roster.
He will become the second-youngest coach in the League; Blashill is one year older than John Hynes, 40, who was hired by the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday.
