Going to have some fun with the Olympics this year. I think there is some value to be found and I have laid my first bet so far.
Australia to win Group A - $2.07 or (+107)
Reasons why? They are very talented team. Plenty of WNBA experience with this team. Biggest thing for me is Cambage their centre who is 6'8 and had a beast of a season in China. I think if they meet USA in the finals she can really give Griner a run for her money. Its a shame she didn't want to come back to the WNBA for some reason. She had issues with the Aussie coach around 6 months ago because she attended a musical festival rather than attend training camp withe the rest of the team. I think she has her head screwed on after that little issue. The only team in this group that I think will have any chance of beating the Aussies is France but I just don't see their depth.. A chance to double my money is good value if you ask me.

Spain and USA are the only 2 teams that could beat the Opals in the Olympics but they are in the other group.
Completely agree Rod.. Only team I think might give the Opals some issues are the Brazilians and maybe France but even so, the first game for the Opals is currently -13.5 vs Brazil so it just shows you how much faith the books have in Brazil. France just don't have much depth compared to the Opals.

Teams playing on their home soil in the Olympics play the games of their lives in front of their friends and family, when representing their countries (look up how home countries go in general in the medal count,..... they punch waaaay above their weight)....don't know anything about the strength of various teams in women's Olympic basketball, but I wouldn't bet against Brazil in a match against Australia or the USA either for that matter. I am taking the home (country) dog EVERY time.
The Aussie men just got crushed by Brazil in an exhibition match.....besides the fans, there is the travel factor, the weather factor, the strange venues that the other teams have never played in before, the food differences and body clock differences. If you've played ball, you know that playing in an arena that you've never played in before can take some time to get used to, the lights, the background, the floor, etc.
The Aussie women I am guessing would have the second best team in the world again, but that in that one game I am taking Brazil or nothing.

Agree. Brazil should play their best each game giving balue to each bet. Just recently argentina men had been hosting a practice tournament and they have won each game and covering. Even outright win as a dog agaisnt serbia

Argentina lost to Australia after blowing a 20 point lead

I would be careful doing that Indigo. The Brazil team has a few big tall WNBA players but they lack depth in the guard positions. I know what you are saying about home teams getting up for these big occasions in front of their home fans but 2012 saw the Olympics in London and Great Britain lost all their group games and finished last in their group.

From a general Olympic standpoint you are correct - history suggests host nations always rise to the ocassion in terms of the medal tally, they always outperform the norm.
But in womens basketball it is pretty simple. USA are clearly #1 team and then comes Australia and Spain who are both on par. The talent then drops away pretty quickly.
Just for reference, in January this year Australia played in a test event tournament in Brazil which involved Argentina, Venezuela and Brazil. Brazil were at full strength however Australia sent basically a second string team with only notable being Jarry. Cambage, Penny Taylor and Hodges didn't even play. They wiped Brazil in the final of the tournament.

We'll probably agree to disagree on this point.....from your points of view if I am reading you correctly, the talent disparity is the deciding factor.
My view is that when Goliath steps onto my home ground in an Olympic situation, that I am playing the game of my life, irregardless of what has transpired before. That emotion carries teams to superhuman efforts.
The Miracle on Ice happened after America got crushed by the Soviets in all of the previous exhibition contests. And the Soviets had no chance when they beat the Americans in the Olympics men's basketball in 1972, when the Americans never had lost an Olympic game previously. Both of those teams that triumphed would have been >+400 underdogs.
I haven't seen enough of the Olympic teams, and I'd be making an assumption that the linesmaker will be putting out a line commiserate with past results and world power ratings with a 3 or 4 point advantage for the host country.....in an Olympic game, I would make that home court advantage 10-12 points if they are an underdog.
Whether I'll be betting this or not, I haven't decided....but I won't be betting against Brazil against either the USA or Australia.
And, this is just a friendly exchange of ideas....I certainly not trying to convince you guys to change your minds.
And if I were to be wrong, it probably wouldn't be the first time.

Nothing wrong with a difference of opinions, happy to have good discussion on any topics
I've taken this bet as well. Think it's outstanding value for reasons above. Fact that only France will be inside a DD underdog against Australia in group stage makes this bet a no brainer for mine

im also never trying to convince anyone either just point out that a different contrary opinion. i mean if it everyone was always right then they wouldn't be on here. im on the side of the home team, as long as they are a decent team, will play better than usual. brazil has a crazy fan base so they will bring a true home crowd.
btw, host argentina won again straight up as a dog today against france.

The discussion in this thread is always appreciated. We all have different opinions and anything possible in sports as we all know. I absolutely understand where you are coming from Indigo. The Brazilians can put up a great fight definitely.
I watched the US/Australia game and the Aussies played well especially little Leilani Mitchell. If it wasn't for a terrible 27-8 run at the end of the 1Q and start of the 2Q, the Aussies hung around well with the US. The US just have too much talent. Their bench is amazing, heck EDD came off the bench and started 7-7 with FG's in the game. My bet on the Aussie girls for the Group winner is just a value bet and if it gets down to any possible hedging opportunity, i will take it.
As for the first game, I would not lay -13.5 with the Aussies vs Brazil. Thats a crazy line considering Brazil are the home team. Will go over the games a little closer to game time..

Yeah, good discussion I have learned a lot from you guys, and because the WNBA to me is such a great product, maybe I'll get involved with the women's Olympics.
Actually a top three Olympic moment of all time for me was when the USA had been undefeated for forever in women's softball and had a pitcher from UCLA on the mound with a 0.62 ERA....they were playing Australia and in the last inning with America up 1-0, an Aussie gal walked and I think with two strikes another Aussie put one over the fence to beat the USA.
The commenter from Australia couldn't get any words out of his mouth, there was just silence, he was either in shock or couldn't believe what he just saw....1996 I think it was.....the USA went on to win the gold if I recall correctly....it was the first loss in over 100 international matches for the USA women.
It is the David versus Goliath stories that make up the human drama of the Olympics.....and the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.

One other things that I've noticed, Australia is great in any sport when they are the underdog, but they are prone to being upset when expected to win.
My "way out there" theory on this is that there is a lot of Irish blood in Australia and the Irish were persecuted for hundreds of years by the British and invaded by the Vikings. Generally they don't look upon authority kindly and with the history of the convicts that got sent here, one can understand. When up against a perceived higher up, it gets their juices flowing.
And in the last year or two Australia, who has a top three in rhe world rugby side every year, traveled to Ireland and got beat when they were expected to dominate.
I'd look to take Australia plus the points versus the USA in women's bball, should they end up playing each other in the medal round. There might be some talent disparity, but Australia won't be intimidated. The Aussies will give as much or more as they take.

Rickyb.....if they benched Griner, the USA women's team is in good hands.....she is a net deficit to her team.
There's a reason Geno has had the success he's had....if you don't produce, or you are hurting the team, you sit, it's as simple as that......I would have a simple chat with each of them, and then sit them on the end of a long bench if they had trouble comprehending the message.
