Recap

Coyotes 3, Avalanche 1: Antoine Vermette scored twice as visiting Phoenix recorded three goals in a 7:02 span of the second period to defeat Colorado.

Thomas Greiss made 29 saves to win for the third time in his last four starts for the Coyotes, who wrapped up a 2-2-0 road trip by evening the season series with the Avalanche at one game apiece. Jordan Szwarz also scored during the barrage while Mike Ribeiro recorded an assist for his sixth point in his last five contests.

Enforcer Patrick Bordeleau scored for the Avalanche, who are 6-7-0 since their 14-2-0 start and have lost three of their last four games. Semyon Varlamov, making his first start since an 8-2 loss at Edmonton on Thursday, recorded 22 stops while having trouble keeping rebounds out of harm's way.

Phoenix opened the scoring at 8:31 of the middle stanza when defenseman Keith Yandle skated into the slot and slid a pass to Vermette, who beat Varlamov along the ice just inside the right post. Szwarz's goal came 3:35 later when he swept in a rebound after Jeff Halpern directed Paul Bissonnette's pass toward Varlamov.

Colorado cut the deficit in half at 14:28 on a fluke goal when Phoenix defenseman Michael Stone tried to clear the puck from behind the net and it caromed off Bordeleau's leg and into the net from a tough angle off Greiss. Vermette answered 1:05 later when he scored into an open net off a rebound of defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson's shot.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The game featured an 8:06 stretch in the first period without a whistle with each team taking three shots on goal. ... Greiss kept it a scoreless game when he denied D Andre Benoit on a breakaway early in the second period. ... Phoenix captain Shane Doan missed his second straight game with the flu while Coyotes D Zbynek Michalek (lower-body injury) returned after missing nine games. He was a plus-1 in 17:32 of ice time.
