Capitals 3, Wild 2 (SO): Nicklas Backstrom scored the lone goal in the shootout after Marcus Johansson tied the score late in regulation to lift host Washington to its fourth straight victory.

Johansson had a goal and an assist while captain Alex Ovechkin also tallied in regulation for the Capitals, who improved to 4-0 in shootouts and have won eight straight in the bonus format dating back to last season. Braden Holtby stopped 33 shots and denied Jason Pominville, Mikko Koivu and Charlie Coyle in the shootout.

Coyle scored his first of the season in his third game back from injury and Mikael Granlund added his second goal in three games for Minnesota, which saw its three-game winning streak come to an end. Josh Harding made 25 saves.

Johansson’s shot deflected off a Minnesota defenseman in front of Harding and trickled in with 3:08 remaining in regulation. Holtby stood tall on a Wild power play in the final minute of the third period to force overtime.

Ovechkin opened the scoring 8:10 into the contest with a slap shot on a power play, but Coyle tied the score for Minnesota with the man advantage late in the first period, converting a cross-slot feed from Zach Parise. Granlund gave the Wild a 2-1 lead 6:07 into the second period, chipping a loose puck past Holtby after Pominville lost control of it at the side of the net.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Wild D Ryan Suter finished with 36:51 of ice time, the most in a regular-season game since Dan Boyle in February 2008. … Ovechkin has 13 goals in 14 games. … The Wild are 0-3 in shootouts this season.
