Wild 5, Stars 1: Matt Cooke continued his strong start to the season with a goal and an assist in the first period as Minnesota extended its home point streak to four games.

Justin Fontaine and defenseman Mathew Dumba scored their first career goals and Nino Niederreiter added his first with the Wild, who improved to 2-0-2 at Xcel Energy Center. Zach Parise netted his team-leading fourth goal in the third period and Josh Harding made 18 saves en route to his second consecutive victory.

Jamie Benn scored a power-play goal for Dallas, which lost for the first time since its season opener. Dan Ellis stopped 31 shots in his first start in place of the injured Kari Lehtonen (lower body).

Cooke set up Fontaine 12 seconds into the contest and scored on a wraparound with 9:19 left in the first period. Dumba made it 3-0 on a power play 8:23 into the second and Niederreiter extended the lead 1:57 later.

Benn got Dallas on the board with 7:20 remaining in the session, but Parise stuffed the puck past Ellis from the doorstep during a power play with 5 1/2 minutes left in the third to restore Minnesota’s four-goal advantage.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Minnesota was credited with 15 takeaways in the game, while the Stars had just three. … Fontaine’s goal was the fastest at the start of a game in franchise history. … Niederreiter, 21, had two goals and one assist in 64 career games with the New York Islanders before joining Minnesota.
