Sabres 2, Islanders 1 (SO): Ryan Miller denied all three shootout attempts while playing in his 500th career game to make Thomas Vanek's tally in the first round stand up as host Buffalo finished its season with five wins in seven contests.
Keith Aucoin scored in regulation and Evgeni Nabokov finished with 21 saves for the Islanders, who finished the regular season with three straight setbacks (0-1-2) against non-playoff teams. Coach Jack Capuano's club moved into sixth place - one point ahead of Ottawa and the New York Rangers. The Senators have two games remaining while the Rangers have one.
After Vanek snapped a shot past Nabokov in the first round, Miller (30 saves) made a pair of glove saves on Frans Nielsen and Brad Boyes before denying John Tavares to secure the victory.
Miller saw his bid for his 29th career shutout - and first in 2013 - go by the boards at 7:26 of the third period after he failed to reach the puck on a dump-in. Aucoin skated in and got to the puck before wristing a shot from the left faceoff circle to tie the game at 1-1.
After hitting the crossbar in the first period, rookie Brian Flynn wasn't going to be denied early in the second. Vanek skated in from the left circle before sliding the puck to Flynn, who unleashed a slap shot from the edge of the right circle past Nabokov 3:29 into the period.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Miller added to the growing rumors of his impending departure from Buffalo by putting his condo up for sale. ... Buffalo entered the game having converted on six of its last 14 power-play opportunities but went 0-for-3 on Friday. ...
