Kings 3, Avalanche 2 (SO): Jeff Carter, captain Dustin Brown and Anze Kopitar scored in the shootout as host Los Angeles edged Colorado.
Carter scored a power-play goal in regulation, Mike Richards recorded a tally and an assist and Jonathan Quick made 26 saves for the Kings, who remained one point ahead of San Jose for fourth place in the Western Conference.
Jean-Sebastien Giguere turned aside all 12 shots he faced in relief of Sami Aittokallio but could not make a stop in the shootout. Carter beat the veteran with a backhand shot, Brown scored low to the glove side and Kopitar slipped a backhander between Giguere's pads to clinch the win.
Paul Stastny and Patrick Bordeleau scored while Aittokallio made 23 saves for Colorado before leaving his first NHL game midway through the third period with leg cramps. The Avalanche have won only one of their last 16 road contests (1-11-4).
Carter opened the scoring 5:27 into the contest as he beat Aittokallio from the left faceoff circle, and Richards scored from the slot 1:47 later to double the lead. Stastny halved the deficit with 3:38 remaining in the second period and Bordeleau forged a tie at 5:05 of the third with his first career goal.
