Recap

Sharks 3, Red Wings 2 (SO): Patrick Marleau netted a short-handed goal and ended the contest by scoring in the third round of the shootout as visiting San Jose improved to 8-1-1 in its last 10 meetings with Detroit.

Logan Couture scored a power-play goal and Antti Niemi turned aside 27 shots for the Sharks, who snapped a modest two-game skid (0-1-1) following a seven-game winning streak. San Jose moved into fourth place in the Western Conference, one point ahead of St. Louis and Pacific Division-rival Los Angeles. The Blues skated to a 2-0 win over Minnesota while the reigning Stanley Cup champion Kings host Colorado later on Thursday.

Defenseman Jakub Kindl scored his first career power-play goal and Justin Abdelkader also tallied. Jimmy Howard, who reportedly is close to finalizing a six-year contract extension, finished with 28 saves as the Red Wings fell to 2-4-1 in their last seven contests.

Detroit, which holds a two-point edge over idle Phoenix for eighth place in the West, moved within two of seventh-place Minnesota.

Pavel Datsyuk shuffled from forehand to backhand before beating Niemi in the first round of the shootout, and Couture pulled San Jose even by solving Howard between the pads. Niemi denied Damien Brunner and Gustav Nyquist before Marleau's wrist shot beat Howard to end the contest.

After Brent Burns was whistled for holding Henrik Zetterberg, the captain made San Jose pay by setting up Kindl for a one-timer to give Detroit a 2-1 lead at 2:29 of the third period. Couture answered 1:31 later by backhanding the puck under the crossbar from in close.

With teammate Tommy Wingels serving a boarding penalty, Marleau opened the scoring at 2:35 of the first period by converting Joe Pavelski's nifty feed on a 2-on-1 rush. Detroit forged a 1-1 tie when Abdelkader accepted Johan Franzen's pass and beat Niemi.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Anaheim would have clinched a postseason berth had San Jose won in regulation. ... D Brad Stuart received a warm reception after being introduced prior to the contest. The former Red Wing was playing in his first game at Joe Louis Arena since signing with San Jose in the offseason. ... Both teams went 1-for-4 on the power play.
