Recap

Capitals 2, Islanders 1 (SO):
Captain Alex Ovechkin scored the lone goal of the shootout in the second round and defenseman Mike Green tallied in regulation as Washington edged visiting New York.

Ovechkin went to his backhand and flipped the puck under the crossbar to beat Evgeni Nabokov. Brad Boyes shot wide and Braden Holtby stopped John Tavares to clinch the victory after making 35 saves for the Capitals, who climbed into first place in the Southeast Division as Winnipeg was defeated by Montreal on Thursday.

Kyle Okposo scored with 4:59 remaining in the third period and Nabokov made 21 saves as the Islanders earned at least one point for the sixth time in the last seven games (5-1-1). New York moved into seventh place in the Eastern Conference.

The Capitals could not clear the puck late in the third and Josh Bailey circled behind the net before feeding Frans Nielsen, who delivered a touch pass to Okposo across the slot for the tying goal.

Green continued a goal-scoring binge with 13 seconds left in the first period, accepting a feed from Marcus Johansson and sending a wrist shot between Nabokov’s pads. Green leads all NHL defensemen with seven even-strength goals.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Ovechkin saw his point streak end at nine games. … Washington C Nicklas Backstrom set up Green’s tally and has five assists in the last two contests. He has collected 403 points in 402 career games. … Tavares was held off the scoresheet for just the second time in the last nine games.
