Penguins 2, Capitals 1: Defenseman Matt Niskanen scored to snap a tie with 8:02 remaining in the third period and Marc-Andre Fleury turned aside 28 shots as Pittsburgh skated to its 10th consecutive victory overall and eighth straight at Consol Energy Center.
Defenseman Paul Martin added a power-play goal and captain Sidney Crosby collected two assists for his 200th career multi-point contest.
Captain Alex Ovechkin scored in the second straight game and Mike Ribeiro secured his team-leading 22nd assist. Braden Holtby finished with 34 saves for the Capitals, who fell for the fifth time in seven games.
After the teams traded power-play goals in the second period, Niskanen netted the eventual game-winner midway through the third. Matt Cooke exited the penalty box after serving a four-minute penalty and fed Niskanen, who fired a wrist shot in the slot past Holtby for his fourth goal.
Ovechkin scored his team-leading 12th goal at 8:14 of the second period after cleaning up Troy Brouwer's shot which caromed off Niskanen. Martin answered nearly three minutes later after he accepted Crosby's feed at the point. The defenseman unleashed a blast which beat a screened Holtby for his sixth goal.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Pittsburgh C Evgeni Malkin and D Kris Letang were spectators on Tuesday. Malkin, who is the reigning Hart Trophy winner, missed his sixth consecutive game with an upper-body injury. Letang, who is the NHL leader in points among defensemen, is listed as day-to-day with a lower-body injury. ... Washington C Brooks Laich made his season debut and registered three hits and a shot on goal. Laich had been sidelined since sustaining a groin injury in November while playing in Switzerland. ... Crosby has eight points in three games versus the Capitals. He collected three assists in the Penguins' 6-3 victory on Feb. 3 before scoring a goal and setting up two others in a 5-2 win four days later.
