Islanders 3, Senators 2 (SO): John Tavares and Frans Nielsen scored in the shootout as New York won for the first time on its season-long seven-game homestand.

Michael Grabner gave the Islanders a 2-1 lead with 3:29 remaining in the third period and Brad Boyes opened the scoring in the first. Evgeni Nabokov stopped 29 shots and was perfect in the shootout as New York improved to 1-2-1 on the homestand with three contests remaining.

Rookie defenseman Patrick Wiercioch scored his first NHL goal to tie the game on the power play with 1:09 remaining in regulation and rookie Mika Zibanejad tallied in the second period for the Senators, who are winless three contests into a five-game road trip. Robin Lehner made 33 saves in his second start of the season.

Nielsen beat Lehner between the pads with a forehand deke and Tavares did an impersonation of Peter Forsberg's famous one-handed deke to clinch the win in the bonus format. Late in regulation, Grabner came flying off the bench and fired a wrist shot from the slot that beat Lehner over the left pad to give the Islanders the advantage, but Kyle Okposo’s tripping penalty shortly thereafter gave the Senators the opportunity to send the game to overtime.

Islanders defenseman Travis Hamonic was involved in both of Ottawa’s goals. His attempt to intercept a centering pass bounced right to Zibanejad in the slot for the first goal and he inadvertently deflected Wiercioch’s point shot over Nabokov on the late power-play goal.
