Sabres 3, Islanders 2: Defenseman Alexander Sulzer snapped a tie at 7:35 of the third period as Buffalo handed host New York its fourth consecutive loss.
Thomas Vanek scored his league-leading 11th goal and added an assist, defenseman Christian Ehrhoff also scored and Ryan Miller made 41 saves for the Sabres, who have won two in a row following a three-game losing skid.
John Tavares and Colin McDonald scored while Evgeni Nabokov stopped 12 shots as the Islanders outshot Buffalo 43-15 but fell to 1-4-0 at home.
Sulzer unleashed a one-timer from the left point that beat Nabokov for his third goal. The goal held up as the game-winner as Tavares hit the right post with a backhander on a penalty shot with 3:53 remaining after being hooked from behind by Ehrhoff during a breakaway.
Buffalo took the lead midway through the first period as Vanek buried a loose puck on the doorstep, but New York pulled even when Tavares tucked the puck inside the right post with 42 seconds remaining in the period. After Ehrhoff made it 2-1 with 7:39 left in the second, McDonald converted a backhand pass from behind the net by Casey Cizikas over five minutes later to tie the game again.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Buffalo D Tyler Myers was a healthy scratch. The former Calder Trophy winner has just one goal and a minus-9 rating in 11 games this season. ... The Islanders lifted the suspension of C Josh Bailey, who made his season debut after recovering from a knee injury suffered while playing in Germany during the lockout. ... D Lubomir Visnovsky made his Islanders debut after his suspension for failing to report to the team was lifted on Thursday. Visnovsky was acquired from Anaheim in June.
