Maple Leafs 3, Jets 2: Phil Kessel’s first goal of the season gave Toronto its first victory in Winnipeg since the Jets relocated to Manitoba.
Kessel put the Maple Leafs ahead on the power play with 4:08 remaining in the third period after Matt Frattin tied the game with his sixth of the season 54 seconds earlier. Tyler Bozak also scored for Toronto, which received 23 saves from James Reimer.
Rookie Zach Redmond scored his first career goal and captain Andrew Ladd also tallied for the Jets, who lost at home for the second time this season.
Kessel accepted a drop pass from Bozak and fired a wrist shot from the top of the right faceoff circle for his first goal on a league-leading 46 shots. Frattin tied the game by tipping Cody Franson's shot past Ondrej Pavelec, who finished with 15 saves.
Redmond and Bozak traded short-handed goals early in the second period to open the scoring. Winnipeg finished 0-for-4 on the power play, dropping to 0-2-1 in games when it fails to score with the man advantage.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Redmond has three points in the last two games. … Toronto LW Frazer McLaren dropped the gloves for his second consecutive game, fighting Chris Thorburn with five minutes remaining in the first period. … C Nazem Kadri had an assist on Frattin’s goal and leads the Maple Leafs with nine points.
