Red Wings 4, Stars 1: Valtteri Filppula scored twice, captain Henrik Zetterberg connected on a 5-on-3 power play and host Detroit scored four unanswered goals to defeat reeling Dallas.
Rookie Damien Brunner scored his third of the season and Jimmy Howard stopped 25 shots for the Red Wings, who have traded losses and wins in each of their six games to open the season.
Loui Eriksson scored the lone goal for the Stars, who are winless in their last four games (0-3-1).
After Eriksson opened the scoring midway into the second period, the Red Wings responded with a pair of goals roughly six minutes apart. Filppula finished from in front of the net following a pass from Pavel Datsyuk at the red line to forge a 1-1 tie. Zetterberg scored from the faceoff circle with just five seconds left on a 5-on-3 power play to push Detroit ahead for good with 24 ticks left in the second.
The Red Wings put it out of reach when Brunner and Filppula tallied 23 seconds apart in the third period. Brunner camped out in front of the net and deflected Johan Franzen's shot out of the air past Kari Lehtonen before Filppula closed the scoring with a one-timer.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Datsyuk finished with two assists, giving him six on the season. ... The Red Wings still remain the only team without a first-period goal this season. … Eriksson has eight goals in 14 career games at Joe Louis Arena.
