Recap

Senators 3, Capitals 2:
Veteran defenseman Sergei Gonchar scored a power-play goal with 2:30 remaining in the third period as host Ottawa erased a two-goal deficit.

Craig Anderson made 31 saves for the Senators, including one on Mike Ribeiro all alone from 15 feet with 39.7 seconds left. Jim O'Brien scored on his 24th birthday and Milan Michalek also recorded a goal for Ottawa.

Michal Neuvirth stopped 24 shots in falling to 4-1-0 against the Senators. Troy Brouwer and Matt Hendricks scored first-period goals for Washington, which lost its first four games of the season before defeating Buffalo 3-2 on Sunday.

The Capitals took a 1-0 lead after Brouwer accepted a feed from Wojtek Wolski and finished off a 2-on-1 when he moved in alone and slid a backhand shot past Anderson at 13:15. Hendricks deflected Jay Beagle's shot between Anderson's pads 4:28 later to make it 2-0.

The Senators cut the deficit in half when O'Brien redirected a centering pass from Erik Condra past a surprised Neuvirth with 1:23 remaining in the second period and tied it 2:20 into the third period on Michalek's goal. With Joel Ward off for high-sticking, Gonchar's blast from the point deflected off Hendricks and past Neuvirth.
