Penguins 2, Senators 1 (SO): Evgeni Malkin scored the decisive goal in the third round of the shootout and set up James Neal in the first period to give Pittsburgh its second win in its last five trips to Ottawa.

The reigning Hart Trophy winner backhanded the puck between Craig Anderson’s pads after Neal, Jason Spezza, captain Sidney Crosby and Kyle Turris all scored during the shootout. Milan Michalek’s first-round attempt was stopped by Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, who finished with 31 saves.

Colin Greening scored his first goal of the season and Anderson turned aside 33 shots for the Senators, who lost at home for the first time this season.

Neal opened the scoring after one-timing a cross-ice pass from Malkin past an outstretched Anderson. Greening tied the game with 6:16 remaining in the second period after collecting a rebound from a shot by Spezza and putting it around Fleury.

Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson, who won the Norris Trophy last season, had two clear shots from the right faceoff circle in the final minute of regulation, but sailed both of his attempts.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson was scratched because he is suffering from an illness. … Penguins D Brooks Orpik led all skaters with nine blocked shots. … Spezza has points in every game this season for Ottawa.
