Canucks 3, Flames 2 (SO): Zack Kassian opened the scoring in the second period and netted the decisive goal in the fifth round of the shootout as host Vancouver secured its first victory.
Cory Schneider rebounded from an early exit in the season opener to turn aside 34 shots for the Canucks. The netminder stopped four of the five shooters he faced in the bonus format - including Curtis Glencross in the final round.
Mikael Backlund netted a power-play goal and Alex Tanguay also tallied. Miikka Kiprusoff finished with 34 saves and picked up an assist for the Flames, who dropped their road opener for the eighth time in nine seasons.
After Alex Burrows and Tanguay scored in the respective first and second rounds of the shootout, Schneider and Kiprusoff denied all comers until Kassian used a brilliant move before backhanding the puck into the net.
After Kassian and Mason Raymond gave Vancouver a 2-0 advantage in the second period, Tanguay answered by collecting Glencross' nifty cross-ice pass and wristing a shot that handcuffed Schneider with exactly nine minutes remaining in the session. Backlund forged a 2-2 tie with a snap shot from the high slot with 3:57 left in the period.
