Ryan Miller made 34 saves and Thomas Vanek notched an assist for his sixth point in two games for the Sabres, who were outshot 35-20.
Nazem Kadri tallied and Ben Scrivens stopped 18 shots for the Maple Leafs, who fell to 44-33-15-3 in home openers.
Hodgson gave Toronto the lead less than nine minutes into the game. Defenseman Christian Ehrhoff unleashed a shot from the left point that deflected off Hodgson and past Scrivens at 8:51 for his second goal of the season.
Pominville doubled the advantage at 4:51 of the second as he converted a cross-slot pass from Vanek during a three-on-two rush. Kadri scored with Toronto on the power play and Scrivens pulled for an extra attacker with 1:42 remaining in the third, but a potential tying goal with 77 seconds left was waved off as Joffrey Lupul punched the puck into the net.
