Recap

Sabres 2, Maple Leafs 1: Cody Hodgson and Jason Pominville scored and Buffalo withstood a furious late charge as Toronto came up short in its home opener.

Ryan Miller made 34 saves and Thomas Vanek notched an assist for his sixth point in two games for the Sabres, who were outshot 35-20.

Nazem Kadri tallied and Ben Scrivens stopped 18 shots for the Maple Leafs, who fell to 44-33-15-3 in home openers.

Hodgson gave Toronto the lead less than nine minutes into the game. Defenseman Christian Ehrhoff unleashed a shot from the left point that deflected off Hodgson and past Scrivens at 8:51 for his second goal of the season.

Pominville doubled the advantage at 4:51 of the second as he converted a cross-slot pass from Vanek during a three-on-two rush. Kadri scored with Toronto on the power play and Scrivens pulled for an extra attacker with 1:42 remaining in the third, but a potential tying goal with 77 seconds left was waved off as Joffrey Lupul punched the puck into the net.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The ceremonial faceoff at the Air Canada Centre featured Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield dropping the puck from the international space station. Former Maple Leafs Felix Potvin, Darcy Tucker and Darryl Sittler all played a role in getting the puck to Johnny Bower, who ultimately dropped it between captains Pominville of Buffalo and Dion Phaneuf of Toronto. ... Sabres C Ville Leino remained sidelined with a lower-body injury. ... Toronto C Tyler Bozak was 22-for-26 on faceoffs.
