Lightning 6, Capitals 3: Martin St. Louis scored his second power-play goal 4:57 into the third period to snap a tie and defenseman Eric Brewer recorded two goals as Tampa Bay pulled away from visiting Washington.
Cory Conacher, who assisted on St. Louis’ second-period tally, ripped home a Teddy Purcell pass on a two-on-one for a 5-3 advantage with 6:36 remaining for his first goal in his NHL debut. Brewer added his second goal with 3:18 left to seal it.
Vincent Lecavalier had a goal and an assist, Purcell contributed three assists and Steven Stamkos added a pair of helpers for Tampa Bay, which outshot the Capitals 26-13 in the final two periods. Goaltender Anders Lindback made 27 saves in his Lightning debut.
Joel Ward scored a power-play goal in the first period and knocked in a rebound 1:59 into the second to knot the game twice. Wojtek Wolski, who also had an assist, tied the game at 3-all with 1:45 left in the second after a Lightning turnover.
St. Louis also had an assist and his go-ahead goal came on a 5-on-3 power play, taking a pass from Stamkos and hammering a shot past Washington goalie Braden Holtby glove side. Holtby finished with 28 saves.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Lecavalier played in his 999th career game. … Defenseman Tom Poti played his first NHL game since Jan. 12, 2011, due to a broken pelvis and groin injuries. He assisted on Washington’s first goal. … Tampa Bay was 3-for-7 on the power play and killed three of Washington’s four chances.
