CAPITALS 2, RANGERS 1: Braden Holtby turned aside 30 shots as host Washington forced a seventh game in its Eastern Conference semifinal series with New York.

Holtby and the Capitals bounced back from a crushing Game 5 overtime loss to even the best-of-seven at three wins apiece. Game 7 goes Saturday in Manhattan.

Alexander Ovechkin and Jason Chimera scored for the Capitals while Nicklas Backstrom added a pair of assists.

Carl Hagelin spoiled Holtby's bid for his first career playoff shutout with 51 seconds remaining.

A power play helped Washington get on the board just 1:28 into the game. With Anton Stralman in the box for tripping, Backstrom fed Ovechkin in the slot and the Russian sniper one-timed a shot past the glove hand of New York netminder Henrik Lundqvist.

After missing out on a chance to extend the lead on its second man advantage early in the second period, Washington made good just past the midway point of the frame. John Carlson threw the puck in front from the side boards and it deflected off of Backstrom and right to Chimera, who tapped it into the wide-open net from point-blank range.

The Rangers squandered a power play early in the third, but finally broke the goose egg when Hagelin redirected a Marian Gaborik shot in front.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Washington hasn't trailed after two periods in any of its 13 postseason games so far. ... Holtby has yet to lose consecutive games in the playoffs. ... Lundqvist turned aside 21 shots in defeat. ... New York was held without a power-play goal in five chances.
