Recap

COYOTES 3, AVALANCHE 2: Raffi Torres scored a pair of goals and Mike Smith made 39 saves en route to his 100th career victory as Phoenix held on to continue its home dominance over Colorado.

Kyle Chipchura also tallied and Gilbert Brule recorded two assists for the Coyotes, who improved to 7-0-1 in their last eight home meetings with the Avalanche. Phoenix, which has earned at least one point in seven of eight overall (4-1-3), moved one point ahead of Dallas for seventh place in the Western Conference.

As captain Shane Doan began serving his three-game suspension for elbowing Dallas' Jamie Benn on Tuesday, the Coyotes built a 3-0 lead before withstanding a comeback attempt by Colorado in the third period.

Torres opened the scoring less than 3 1/2 minutes into the game when he chipped a loose puck on the doorstep past Semyon Varlamov for his 15th goal. Daymond Langkow notched an assist on the play, the 400th of his NHL career.

Chipchura doubled the lead with 4:17 remaining in the first period. Ray Whitney carried the puck across the blue line before making a lead pass to Chipchura, who skated down the slot alone and beat Varlamov after using a backhand deke.

Whitney extended his points streak to six games with the assist.

Phoenix made it 3-0 late in the second on Torres' sixth goal in eight contests. After Varlamov stopped Boyd Gordon's shot from the right faceoff circle, Torres buried the rebound from the left circle to complete his second two-goal performance of the campaign.

Ryan O'Reilly spoiled Smith's bid for his sixth shutout when he gained possession behind the net, skated to the bottom of the right circle and fired the puck into the top left corner for his 18th tally. Paul Stastny cut the deficit to one by tipping Jamie McGinn's right-point shot past Smith.

Varlamov stopped 22 shots for the Avalanche, who lost in regulation for the first time in seven games (5-1-1) and fell to ninth place in the West.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Colorado had allowed a total of two goals over its previous three contests. ... Varlamov lost for only the third time in 13 starts. ... Stastny extended his goal-scoring streak to three games while O'Reilly ended a seven-game drought.
