AVALANCHE 3, OILERS 1: Mark Olver had a goal and an assist in his first game of the season and defenseman Erik Johnson scored for the third straight contest as Colorado snapped a four-game road losing streak.

Rookie Gabriel Landeskog also scored, Ryan O’Reilly had three assists and Semyon Varlamov made 26 saves for Colorado, which moved to within three points of a playoff spot in the West. Landeskog also had an assist.

Ryan Jones scored on a rebound for the Oilers, who lost for the first time in regulation in their last eight home games against Colorado (5-1-2).

Johnson gave the Avalanche a 1-0 lead when his blast from the point beat Devan Dubnyk with 47 seconds left in the field period for the first three-game goal streak of his career.

Olver took a feed from O’Reilly and wired a shot past Dubnyk at 3:55 of the second and Landeskog muscled his way to the front of the net and deposited Paul Stastny’s pass 5:42 later on the power play to make it 3-0.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Olver was recalled from Lake Erie of the American Hockey League to replace TJ Galiardi, who was placed on injured reserve with a torso injury. Olver had two goals and nine points in 18 games for the Avalanche last season. ... Colorado, which has the NHL’s top power play on the road, went 1 for 4. Edmonton, which is No. 1 at home with the man advantage, was 0 for 4 … Colorado improved to 3-13-1 against the Northwest Division.
