Evgeni Malkin scored in the shootout as the Penguins erased a two-goal deficit early in the third period to defeat the Islanders 3-2 on Thursday for their 12th straight home win over New York.

Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury improved to 7-0-0 at home and 10-2-0 in his last 12 starts against the Islanders as the Penguins (8-2-2) outshot New York 32-19, including 13-2 in a scoreless second period. It was Pittsburgh's fifth straight win.

The Penguins have won 21 of their last 27 against the Islanders.

Matt Martin and Frans Nielsen scored for the Islanders (3-4-1), who have lost four straight.

Islanders goaltender Evgeni Nabokov left the game after overtime and was replaced by Rick DiPietro. It was DiPietro's first action of the season.

The Penguins tied it 2-2 with a nifty power-play goal at 4:15 of the third period when Malkin passed to Chris Kunitz in the slot, who one-timed a pass to James Neal, who one-timed a shot past Nabokov from below the left face-off dot for his ninth goal.

Kunitz had scored 2:46 earlier to cut the lead to 2-1.

The top two penalty-killing units in the NHL combined to extinguish 7 of the 8 power plays. The Penguins have allowed only one goal in 37 shorthanded situations this season.
