Recap
Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored two goals and Mike Smith made 19 saves as the host Phoenix Coyotes earned a 4-1 win over their descendants, the Winnipeg Jets, on Saturday.
Daymond Langkow and Ray Whitney each added goals for the Coyotes, who have totaled nine tallies in back-to-back wins.
The Coyotes set the tone right from the start, as Langkow set up in the slot and took a pass from Whitney circling behind the net. Langkow one-timed it past Chris Mason just 34 seconds into the game.
Ekman-Larsson struck later in the first, finding the puck on the right point after a scrum in front of the crease and wristing it between Mason’s pads. He would add a hard slap shot from just in front of the blue line in the second period, sending it above Mason’s glove.
The Phoenix franchise was the original Winnipeg Jets, playing in Canada until moving to Arizona in 1996. The Atlanta Thrashers returned hockey to Winnipeg with their move north of the border this summer and were renamed the Jets.
The new Jets have yet to secure a win in three games and have allowed a total of 13 goals.
