After Carolina quarterback Cam Newton orchestrated a 68-yard drive that led to a field goal on the game's first possession, the NFC champion Panthers could not hold off the host Baltimore Ravens in a 22-19 loss in a preseason game Thursday night.

Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, who is recovering from knee surgery, did not play, although he is expected to be ready for the regular season opener.

Newton went 5 of 6 for 36 yards. Carolina third-year wide receiver Brenton Bersin caught five passes for 69 yards.

Ravens running back Terrance West, who is fighting for a starting role, had 25 yards on nine carries with a pair of touchdowns. Baltimore backup quarterback Ryan Mallett completed 11 of 15 passes for 91 yards with a touchdown and interception.

The Panthers took a 10-0 lead when Devin Funchess caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Derek Anderson with 1:28 left in the first quarter. The Ravens responded when Mallett put together a 13-play, 84-yard scoring drive capped by a 1-yard run by West.

Baltimore took a 14-10 lead when Javorius "Buck" Allen took a screen pass from Mallett and ran 19 yards for the score. Graham Gano's second field goal as time expired pulled Carolina to within 14-13 at the half.

After West scored from 2 yards to open the third quarter on a solid cutback, Ravens quarterback Josh Johnson completed the 2-point conversion with a short pass to Nick Boyle for a 22-13 lead. Gano hit two more field goals and the Panthers had a chance to retake the lead on a fourth-and-goal with 2:28 left, but a pass by Joe Webb was knocked down by Ravens safety Matt Elam.
