Quarterback John Wolford ran for two touchdowns and Wake Forest defeated Syracuse 28-9 on Saturday night at rain-swept BB&T Field in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The Demon Deacons drove 78 yards on six plays for a 3-yard touchdown run by running back Cade Carney with 3:59 left. That resulted in the first second-half points.

Then defensive back Cameron Glenn picked up a fumble and returned it 83 yards for a touchdown with 1:30 left, allowing the Demon Deacons (5-1, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) to match their best six-game start to a season in a decade.

Wolford had touchdown runs of 7 and 37 yards, the latter with 1:43 left in the first half. The second scoring drive consumed 75 yards in seven plays.

Carney, a freshman who missed the past three games with a knee injury, returned to finish with 104 yards on 29 carries for Wake Forest, which bounced back a week after their only loss.

Wolford gained 94 yards on 12 carries and threw for 140 yards (13 of 22).

Syracuse opened the scoring with a first-quarter safety. Dontae Strickland ran 1 yard for a second-quarter touchdown to push the Orange to a 9-7 lead.

Strickland had 74 yards on 13 carries. Eric Dungey completed 16 of 25 passes for 156 yards for Syracuse.

Wake Forest defeated Syracuse for the first time in four ACC meetings.
