No. 13 Clemson 38, Virginia Tech 17: Tajh Boyd ran for two scores and threw for another, and Andre Ellington added 96 rushing yards and a touchdown to propel the host Tigers.
DeAndre Hopkins caught a 37-yard touchdown pass from Boyd that made it 31-10 late in the third quarter, and Sammy Watkins had eight receptions for 84 yards for Clemson (6-1, 3-1 ACC).
Quarterback Logan Thomas tossed an early 29-yard score to Corey Fuller and added a 19-yard touchdown run for Virginia Tech (4-4, 2-2), which has now dropped three straight to Clemson by an average of 23 points, including last year's 38-10 rout in the ACC title game.
The Tigers capitalized on two big miscues to take a 17-10 halftime edge despite being outgained 248-137 in the opening half.
They recovered a punt that grazed an unsuspecting Hokies player at the Virginia Tech 26-yard line, and soon after Boyd vaulted in for a 1-yard touchdown run with 9:29 left in the half. Jonathan Meeks then intercepted an overthrown pass by Thomas and dashed 74 yards for a score to extend the margin to 17-7 with 3:46 remaining in the second quarter.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Watkins appeared to fumble but he was ruled down by contact, a ruling that was upheld by video review. That kept alive the drive that ended in Ellington's score. … Virginia Tech's Michael Cole had a candidate for interception of the year, snaring a tipped ball as he lay on his back in the first quarter. … Clemson junior DB Darius Robinson did not return after being carted off with a lower leg injury late in the first quarter. … Clemson's Chandler Catanzaro kicked a 27-yard field goal, extending his school record for consecutive makes to 20.
