Recap: South Carolina 38, Kentucky 17

No. 6 South Carolina 38, Kentucky 17: Junior running back Marcus Lattimore rushed for 108 of his 120 yards and both touchdowns in the second half as the Gamecocks rallied past the host Wildcats for the SEC victory.

Junior quarterback Connor Shaw led the Gamecocks (5-0, 2-0) on three straight touchdown drives to start the second half and finished 15 of 18 passing for 148 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran 19 times for 76 yards.

After the Wildcats (1-4, 0-2) lost starting quarterback Max Smith to an ankle injury on the second play of the game, freshman Jalen Whitlow stepped in and threw for 114 yards. He also scored on an 8-yard touchdown run that gave Kentucky a 10-7 lead late in the first half.

Kentucky then blocked a punt to set up a 10-yard touchdown run by Raymond Sanders, pushing the lead to 17-7 with 1:52 remaining in the first half.

South Carolina scored on its first three second-half possessions to take a 28-17 lead. Lattimore, who torn his ACL midway through last season, followed with his second touchdown run of the game, a 4-yarder, to extend the lead to 35-17 with 5:19 left in the game.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Smith was returning after missing last week’s 38-0 loss to Florida with a shoulder injury. Whitlow, who had attempted only six passes prior to this game, was 12 for 23 with two second-half interceptions. ... Kentucky averaged only 5.1 yards per completion. ... The Gamecocks recorded seven sacks.
