Tyler Hansen threw for a touchdown and rushed for another in his final game, and visiting Colorado unleashed a strong defense to stun Utah 17-14 on Friday, ending the Utes’ bid for the Pac-12 South title.

Utah’s Coleman Peterson missed three field goals, including a 48-yarder with 4 seconds left.

The Buffaloes (3-10, 2-7 Pac-12 South), who were 20.5-point underdogs, held the Utes to 274 yards, including 39 in the first half en route to a 10-0 lead. They snapped their 24-game losing streak outside the state of Colorado.

Colorado, which had been outscored 193-51 in its previous four Pac-12 road games, entered 104th among the 120 FBS teams in yards allowed with 450.

Utah's John White IV, who was eighth in the country with 125.2 rushing yards per game, finished with 28 after injuring his left leg on the second play of the second half.

Utah (7-5, 4-5) needed a victory – coupled with losses by UCLA and Arizona State – to win the South, but instead, UCLA is the division winner, and will play at Oregon or Stanford in the inaugural Pac-12 championship game on Dec. 2.

Colorado took a 17-7 lead on Hansen’s 1-yard touchdown pass to Evan Harrington late in the third quarter after Utah’s Tauni Vakapuna’s 3-yard run earlier in the period got the Utes on the board.

Jon Hays’ 6-yard touchdown pass to Shawn Asiata brought Utah to within 17-14 late in the third quarter before Peterson missed a 26-yard field goal with 8:55 remaining.

The Buffaloes led 7-0 after outgaining Utah 185-17 in the opening period. Hansen’s 1-yard keeper capped a 12-play, 80-yard drive to start the game.

The Buffaloes' 31-26 victory over Texas Tech on Oct. 27, 2007 marked its previous win outside Colorado.
