Nov 17, 2011
Logan Thomas passed for two touchdowns and ran for another as No. 7 Virginia Tech maintained its lead in the ACC Coastal Division with a 24-21 triumph over North Carolina on Thursday.
Jarrett Boykin had 10 catches and David Wilson rushed for over 80 yards for the Hokies, who have won six straight. Virginia Tech (10-1, 6-1 ACC) is 1½ games ahead of rival Virginia in the Coastal Division and can clinch a spot in the ACC Championship Game with a win over the Cavaliers next week.
The Hokies did their damage in the second and third quarters, tying it up on Thomas’ 11-yard scoring pass to Chris Drager in the second and pushing the edge out after the break.
Thomas broke free for a 23-yard score on a quarterback draw early in the third and capped a seven-play drive with a 5-yard touchdown pass later in the frame.
North Carolina battled all the way to the end, cutting it to 24-21 on a touchdown with 2:32 left. An onside kick attempt failed, allowing Virginia Tech to run out the clock.
The Tar Heels have dropped four of their last five.
