No. 22 Michigan, led by Denard Robinson’s three touchdowns and a stellar defense, cruised to a 31-14 victory over Illinois on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
Robinson finished with 122 total yards and Fitzgerald Toussaint rushed for a career-high 192 yards and a score as Michigan (8-2, 4-2 Big Ten) reached the eight-win mark for the first time since 2007 with two games left to play.
The Wolverines, who had three first-half turnovers, took a 14-0 lead into halftime on Robinson’s second touchdown of the game, a 2-yard run with 12:49 left in the second quarter.
Michigan extended its lead to 17-0 on Brendan Gibbons’ 27-yard field goal with 4:31 left in the third.
Illinois (6-4, 2-4 Big Ten), meanwhile, couldn’t get anything going offensively. The Fighting Illini were limited to 214 total yards, including 37 on the ground. Illinois’ first score didn’t come until late in the third quarter when Nathan Scheelhaase rushed for a 13-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 17-7.
Scheelhaase finished 16-for-31 with 170 yards for the Illini, who have lost four straight since starting the season 6-0. A.J. Jenkins, the team’s leading receiver, caught eight passes for 103 yards.
With the loss, Illinois fell to 4-20 against ranked opponents under head coach Ron Zook.
