Recap: Duke 31, Florida International 27

Juwan Thompson ran for two touchdowns in the fourth quarter as visiting Duke came from 10 points down to earn a 31-27 victory over Florida International on Saturday night.

Duke (3-2), which won its third straight for the first time since October 2009, went ahead for good with 6:52 left on Thompson’s 9-yard run that was set up by a Golden Panthers’ fumble.

The Blue Devils also stopped FIU (3-2) on fourth down at the Duke 12 with 2:29 left.

Donovan Varner and Conner Vernon, both from Miami, each went over 100 yards receiving in the same game for the fourth time in their careers for Duke.

Wesley Carroll threw for 328 yards and three touchdowns for the Golden Panthers, who dropped to 0-6 against ACC schools. Carroll’s 34-yard scoring strike to Wayne Times put FIU up 27-17 with 13:30 left in the game.

The teams combined for 372 yards, including 331 passing, and four lead changes in the first quarter. Duke quarterback Sean Renfree was 12 of 14 for 174 yards as the Blue Devils took a 17-14 lead. Renfree finished with 336 yards and two touchdown passes.

FIU’s defense adjusted and the Golden Panthers got their ground attack going. Jack Griffin’s 36-yard field goal tied it 17-17 at halftime.
