Alex Carder passed for five touchdowns, including three in the fourth quarter, as visiting Western Michigan battled back for a 38-31 victory over Connecticut on Saturday.

Jordan White and Chleb Ravenell caught two touchdown passes each and each went over 100 yards receiving for the Broncos (3-2), who got their first win over a BCS-conference opponent since 2008.

Western Michigan finished with 11 rushing yards, all while running out the clock on the final possession, but made up for it in the passing game. Carder completed 37 of 51 passes for 479 yards.

With Connecticut down to a fourth down late in the final quarter, Johnny McEntee scrambled to keep the play alive and threw on the run, hitting Nick Williams in the front corner of the end zone to knot it at 31-31 with 2:03 remaining.

Carder responded right away, needing just 28 seconds and two plays to drive 60 yards. He found Ravenell with a 41-yard touchdown pass.

Connecticut (2-3) battled back from down 17-7 at the half, taking a 24-17 lead with 12:40 left in the game when McEntee hit Lyle McCombs with a 26-yard touchdown pass.

Carder went to work immediately, leading two touchdown drives in the next seven minutes to put the Broncos back on top.
