After a sloppy and sluggish start, host Iowa's offense took flight in the second quarter en route to a 34-7 demolition of Tennessee Tech.

Iowa rattled off 24 points in the second, capped off by an 89-yard interception return by Shaun Prater with only 10 seconds before the half that put Iowa up 27-0.

Driving rains turned the staircases at Kinnick Stadium into waterfalls as the game was delayed during the third quarter for about an hour due to lightning with Iowa leading 34-0.

James Vandenberg did not return at quarterback for Iowa after the delay with the game well out of reach. He rushed for a score and threw for two others in his abbreviated start, both to Marvin McNutt.

The Golden Eagles' star receiver, Tim Benford, was held relatively in check, with six catches for 70 yards.

Tennessee Tech scored its only points on a 1-yard run by Dontey Gay late in the fourth.
