Oklahoma did what Texas couldn’t.
The Sooners grinded out a 31-29 win at Cincinnati, just hours after UCLA upset the Longhorns on Saturday.
Oklahoma and Texas will meet in their annual Red River Rivalry next week. The ninth-ranked Sooners (4-0) will arrive in Dallas unbeaten, thanks to an opportunistic defense. But Cincinnati did not make it easy.
Leading by two with a minute left, the Sooners recovered an onside kick to survive a major scare from Cincinnati.
The Bearcats (1-3) hung tough in front of a large crowd at Paul Brown Stadium. Zach Collaros threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter to twice bring the Bearcats to within two.
But Cincinnati turned the ball over twice in the final six minutes, the killer a muffed punt by Woods at the Bearcats’ eight. The Sooners capitalized with a Landry Jones touchdown pass to Trey Millard for a 31-22 lead with 4:31 to play.
The Bearcats turned it over four times in the game.
Collaros hit Adrien Robinson for 18-yard touchdown pass with 58 seconds to play to give the Bearcats a shot at the onside kick. But Sooner receiver Ryan Broyles fell on a loose ball to secure the recovery and the game.
Jones completed 36-of-52 passes for 372 yards and two touchdowns.
Collaros passed for 305 yards and three touchdowns and one interception.
