Sep 18, 2010
John Clay turned in his ninth straight 100-yard performance, but it was a blocked extra point that made the biggest difference in No. 11 Wisconsin’s 20-19 win over Arizona State in Madison.
Arizona State’s Cameron Marshall scored from the 2 with 4:09 left in the game, but placekicker Thomas Weber potential tying conversion was blocked, enabling the Badgers (3-0) hold on. Arizona State never touched the ball again.
Clay finished with 121 yards on 22 carries and his 19-yard run put Wisconsin ahead 20-13 with 2:48 left in the third. The Sun Devils (2-1) later drove 77 yards for Marshall’s potential game-tying TD.
Wisconsin quarterback Scott Tolzien completed 18-of-24 passes for 237 yards and a touchdown, a 14-yarder to Lance Kendricks just before halftime that put the Badgers ahead 13-10 after trailing through most of the first half. Philip Welch made two field goals for Wisconsin.
Arizona State used a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to lead for most of the half.
Wildcats quarterback Steven Threet completed 21-of-33 passes for 210 yards. Deantre Lewis rushed for 122 yards for Arizona State.
Next up for Wisconsin is Austin Peay Saturday at home. Arizona State hosts Oregon.
