Sophomore quarterback Geno Smith passed for four touchdowns and West Virginia held off a second-half rally by Maryland to defeat the Terrapins 31-17 Saturday at Milan Puskar Stadium.
The victory keeps the No. 21-ranked Mountaineers unbeaten at 3-0. It’s Maryland’s first loss this season.
West Virginia dominated Maryland statistically. The Mountaineers had 468 yards total offense, compared to 219 yards for the Terps. Smith completed 19-of-29 passes for 268 yards and the four touchdowns. Mountaineers running back Noel Devine rushed for 131 yards on 27 carries, his 18th career 100-yard game rushing.
West Virginia’s defense held Maryland to minus-10 yards net rushing and registered eight sacks against the Terps.
Smith picked up where he left off last week when he directed two long scoring drives late in the fourth quarter to rally West Virginia to a 24-21 overtime victory against in-state rival Marshall. Smith completed his first 10 passes of the game against Maryland, three of them for touchdowns as the Mountaineers, who dominated the first half, built a 21-0 lead at halftime. Two WVU turnovers on the Maryland side of the 50-yard line kept the lead from possibly being bigger at the intermission.
Smith’s first two touchdowns went to Tavon Austin, a Baltimore native. Stedman Bailey was on the receiving end of Smith’s third touchdown pass.
The Mountaineers stretched the lead to 28-0 on their first possession of the second half, with Smith connecting with Bailey again for a 5-yard touchdown pass. The score was set up by 66-yard punt return by Jock Sanders.
Maryland battled its way back into the game in the third quarter with a pair of long touchdown passes, one for 60 yards and the other for 80 yards, from quarterback Jamarr Robinson to Torrey Smith.
A 16-play, 76-yard drive that consumed 8:52 of the clock culminated by a 23-yard field goa by Tyler Bitancurt with 3:07 remaining sealed the win for WVU.
