Jon Hoese’s third touchdown of the game with 3:09 left helped the Minnesota Golden Gophers hold off Middle Tennessee, 24-17, on Thursday.

Hoese, who was questionable to make the road trip after his father suffered a stroke, capped a 15-play, 77-yard drive with a one-yard plunge, giving the Gophers (1-0) the lead for good.

The Blue Raiders fumbled away the ensuing kickoff and Minnesota ran out the clock.

While Hoese piled up the scores, it was Duane Bennett who did the heavy lifting for Minnesota, helping it control the clock. Bennett ran for 188 yards on 30 carries and helped the Gophers hold the ball for an astonishing 45-plus minutes.

The Blue Raiders (0-1), playing without starting quarterback Dwight Dasher (suspension), rattled off 17 straight points to take a 17-14 lead on a 31-yard field goal from Alan Gendreau with 12:44 left in the third.

Phillip Tanner’s 51-yard jaunt on first down set up the go-ahead field goal.
