Florida Gulf Coast 78, Georgetown 68: Sherwood Brown had 24 points as the Eagles earned a stunning upset of the second-seeded Hoyas in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Philadelphia.
Bernard Thompson added 23 points for the 15th-seeded Eagles (25-10), who will play San Diego State in the South Regional quarterfinals Sunday. Brett Comer had 12 points and 10 assists and Florida Gulf Coast hit 10-of-14 free throws in the final 1:16 to hang on in its tournament debut.
Markel Starks led the Hoyas (25-7) with 23 points, including a pair of late 3-pointers to get Georgetown within 72-68 with 54 seconds left. Otto Porter Jr. was held scoreless for a 24-minute span and finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Starks' 3-pointer with 17:27 left tied the game at 31, but the Eagles responded with a 21-2 run to take control. Eddie Murray had a pair of dunks and Thompson and Brown each hit a 3-pointer during the run, which was capped by Chase Fieler's jumper for a 52-33 lead with 12:29 left.
The Eagles went on a 11-2 run during the last 10 minutes of the first half, holding the Hoyas to one field goal. Thompson had six straight points during the run and Brown's fast-break layup put the Eagles ahead 22-20 en route to a 24-22 halftime lead.
