No. 15 N.C. State 82, N.C. Asheville 80: Richard Howell scored 23 points and grabbed 15 rebounds and C.J. Leslie added 14 points and 11 boards as the Wolfpack rallied late to survive a scare from the visiting Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs (1-5) led for most of the night, but they couldn't hang on in the final minutes. N.C. State (4-1) reeled off a 5-0 run to take a 73-69 advantage with three minutes left and didn't trail again.
Lorenzo Brown scored 18 points and Scott Wood added 14 - including five in the pivotal final three minutes - for N.C. State, which got just 11 points from its bench after its reserves averaged 25.3 points in the first four games.
Jeremy Atkinson scored a game-high 28 points to go with six rebounds and five steals for UNC Asheville, and Keith Hornsby added 23 points and four assists. The Bulldogs shot 50 percent (32-of-64) from the field.
UNC Asheville led by as many as seven in each half, including a 64-57 advantage with 8:29 left.
