Recap

Tyreke Evans made two free throws with 18.1 seconds left to give Sacramento its first lead since the opening quarter and the Kings erased a 21-point halftime deficit to defeat the visiting Milwaukee Bucks 103-100 on Thursday and give new coach Keith Smart his first victory.

Coach Paul Westphal was fired earlier Thursday after two-plus seasons and a 51-120 record, and the Kings responded with their most inspired effort of the season after a sluggish start to their third game in three nights.

Brandon Jennings scored a game-high 31 points, but missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer as the Bucks (2-4) fell to 0-4 on the road.

Evans finished with 26 points and 10 rebounds, and Marcus Thornton scored 25 of his 27 points in the second half as the Kings survived a 4-for-21 night from 3-point range.

The Kings' DeMarcus Cousins returned to the starting lineup after coming off the bench the last two games and responded with 19 points and 15 rebounds before fouling out with 4:36 to go.

Cousins didn’t play the previous game when Westphal told him to stay home after he reportedly demanded a trade, which was denied by Cousins.

Drew Gooden started his second straight game in place of Andrew Bogut and had 18 points and nine rebounds for Milwaukee. Bogut is away from the team for personal reasons.

Milwaukee, which was outrebounded 55-31, shot 60.5 percent en route to a 58-37 lead at the half.

Sacramento sprung to life and trimmed the lead to 76-68 after a pair of Evans free throws before Milwaukee scored the final six points of the third quarter – the last three on Jennings’ 3-pointer as the shot clock expired.
