Boston Red Sox vs New York Yankees Box Score on Aug 03, 2019

Gleyber Torres homered in consecutive at-bats and Mike Tauchman delivered the go-ahead two-run single as the New York Yankees recorded a 6-4 victory over the Boston Red Sox to complete a doubleheader sweep Saturday night at Yankee Stadium.

In front of the largest paid crowd (48,101) of the season, the Yankees won their fourth straight and beat Boston for the 10th time in 14 meetings this season to move 13 1/5 games ahead of the third-place Red Sox in the AL East. The Red Sox are on their longest losing streak -- seven consecutive games -- since July 2015, and their 54th loss matches their total from last season.

Torres electrified the crowd by producing his fifth multi-homer game of the season. He started the scoring in a three-run third off Brian Johnson with a one-out drive into the left field seats, then hit a game-tying drive in the fifth off Josh Taylor that reached the second deck in left.

It was the seventh career multi-homer game for Torres, who hit his 22nd and 23rd homers of the season.

Torres nearly hit a third homer when he led off the seventh with a double against Matt Barnes (3-4) off the top of the right-field wall that missed going into the seats by a few inches. Aaron Hicks and Gio Urshela kept the inning going with walks and Tauchman snapped a 4-4 deadlock by hitting a 2-1 breaking ball into left field.

The Yankees won the opener, 9-2, and swept Boston in a doubleheader for the first time since Aug. 18, 2006, at Fenway Park, and swept the Red Sox in a doubleheader at home for the first time since Sept. 16, 1997.

Rafael Devers hit a two-run homer in the third off Nestor Cortes Jr. to give the Red Sox a 2-0 lead but Cameron Maybin's two-run double in the bottom half gave the Yankees a 3-2 lead. The Red Sox regained the lead in the fourth on a two-run single by Mookie Betts.

Chad Green was used as New York's opener and faced four hitters in one-plus scoreless innings. Cortes and Chance Adams followed and each allowed two runs in two innings.

Adam Ottavino pitched a scoreless sixth and Tommy Kahnle (3-0) tossed a scoreless seventh. Zack Britton escaped a bases-loaded jam in the eighth by striking out Devers and Aroldis Chapman converted his 29th save in 34 chances.

Johnson returned from missing over a month due to a non-baseball related medical matter and allowed three runs on eight hits in three innings.
