DENVER -- After three innings Wednesday night, the New York Mets were trailing by five runs and their offense was nonexistent.
However, early deficits are considerably easier to erase at Coors Field, and the Mets used a three-inning flurry capped by a six-run sixth to beat the Colorado Rockies 10-5.
The win was just the second in seven games for the Mets, who trailed 5-0 after the Rockies struck for five runs in the third against starter Chris Flexen. Colorado's rally included six consecutive hits.
Flexen left the game after that inning with a blister on his right index finger, and the Mets' bullpen was virtually untouchable. Four relievers combined to hold the Rockies scoreless for six innings on three hits.
Chasen Bradford (1-0), who relieved Flexen and retired the six batters he faced, was awarded his first major league victory in his sixth career appearance.
Rockies starter Tyler Chatwood (6-12) began the game with three perfect innings before the Mets scored twice in the fourth, added two in the fifth and drove Chatwood from the game in the sixth.
The big blow was Curtis Granderson's three-run homer, his 14th home run of the season. It put the Mets ahead 8-5 and finished Chatwood.
Chatwood got 13 outs on ground balls but gave up seven hits and a career-high tying eight runs (seven earned) in 5 1/3 innings, flaming out after his promising start.
The Mets sent 11 batters to the plate in the sixth inning, which began with Asdrubal Cabrera's single. Yoenis Cespedes followed with a double that tied the score at 5.
Chatwood, who took the mound with a National League-leading 62 walks, then issued his only walk of the game to Jay Bruce. Two batters later, Granderson drove Chatwood's 81st and final pitch into the Mets' bullpen in right center.
Chatwood's woes continued at Coors Field, where his ERA in nine starts rose to 6.75.
Scott Oberg replaced Chatwood and gave up four consecutive two-out hits and two more runs that were plated by Michael Conforto's single and Cabrera's double.
A two-run fifth enabled the Mets to whittle the Rockies' lead to 5-4.
Granderson reached second when first baseman Mark Reynolds couldn't handle his leadoff grounder.
Amed Rosario followed with a triple that crossed third base just beyond the reach of Nolan Arenado. Rosario collected his first career RBI, and he scored on Travis d'Arnaud's groundout.
With the Rockies on top 5-0, Conforto singled to open the fourth inning. Cabrera followed with a single and Yoenis Cespedes grounded into a double play that brought home a run.
Bruce followed with an opposite-field homer to left, his 29th of the season, to make it 5-2.
The Rockies erupted in the third against Flexen.
DJ LeMahieu, Arenado and Reynolds hit consecutive singles to net a run. Gerardo Parra drove in two more with his second double of the game, a drive to the gap in left-center field.
After Parra tried to score on a single by Trevor Story but was thrown out at the plate, Carlos Gonzalez belted a two-run homer to center, increasing the lead to 5-0. The home run was Gonzalez's seventh of the season, his first in 76 at-bats since June 20, and extended his hitting streak to 11 games.
Flexen gave up five runs and eight hits. He has a 12.00 ERA after lasting three innings in each of his first two starts in the majors.
Plate umpire Kerwin Danley was forced to leave the game after getting hit in the left arm by a bounced pitch in the top of the fourth inning.
