Recap

Cardinals 14, Giants 3: Carlos Beltran’s two-run single capped a nine-run fourth inning and visiting St. Louis routed San Francisco in the series finale.

Matt Cain (0-1) retired his first nine batters before running into trouble in the fourth, when the Cardinals sent 14 batters to the plate and had seven base hits with runners in scoring position. Cain pitched 3 2/3 innings and tied a career high by allowing nine earned runs on seven hits and two walks.

The Giants took an early lead with two runs in the third off Adam Wainwright (1-1), who struck out six in seven innings, but the Cardinals answered in a big way in the fourth. Matt Adams sparked the uprising with a bases-loaded, two-run double to put St. Louis ahead 3-2.

Cain was replaced by Jose Mijares after Matt Carpenter’s two-run single put the Cardinals ahead 7-2. Beltran delivered his two-run single off Mijares, who later struck out Yadier Molina to end the inning.

The Cardinals padded their lead in the eighth when Carpenter and Allen Craig each drove in a run, and they scored three more times in the ninth against George Kontos. St. Louis, which went 16-for-24 with runners in scoring position in the final two games of the series, faces Cincinnati in its home opener on Monday.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The nine runs were the most allowed in an inning by the Giants since Aug. 5, 2004, when Cincinnati scored 10 times in the eighth. … Giants 1B Brandon Belt went 1-for-4 and ended an 0-for-13 skid to start the season with a single in the ninth. …San Francisco rookie INF Nick Noonan recorded his first major league hit with a single in the ninth inning off Joe Kelly.
