Recap

Pirates 5, Cardinals 0: A.J. Burnett carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning and recorded his 2,000th career strikeout as host Pittsburgh cooled off St. Louis.

Burnett (1-2) allowed one hit - Carlos Beltran's two-out double - and struck out eight in seven innings. He retired the first 16 Cardinals before hitting Daniel Descalso with a pitch. Neil Walker had two hits and an RBI, while Travis Snider, Gaby Sanchez and Pedro Alvarez also had run-scoring hits.

Rookie Shelby Miller (2-1) yielded two runs on six hits and struck out six in six innings to absorb his first major-league defeat as the Cardinals lost for the second time in their last seven games. Burnett and three relievers retired the final seven Cardinals in order.

Starling Marte extended his hitting streak to 10 games when he led off the Pirates' first with a triple and scored on Snider's single. After Andrew McCutchen hit into a double play, Garrett Jones singled and Walker doubled before Miller retired Alvarez on a pop out.

The 22-year-old Miller, who has a 1.96 ERA, retired 15 in a row before McCutchen reached on a broken-bat infield hit with two outs in the sixth. Jones walked and Walker stroked a 2-2 pitch into center field to score McCutchen and make it 2-0.
