Recap

Rays 8, Athletics 1: Yunel Escobar recorded three hits, including a solo home run, and Roberto Hernandez pitched six strong innings as Tampa Bay completed a three-game sweep of visiting Oakland.

Escobar also had a double and an RBI single to register his first multi-hit game of the season and Ryan Roberts added two hits and an RBI for the Rays. Hernandez (1-3) allowed three hits and one run, striking out seven, to earn his first victory since Sept. 20, 2011.

The Athletics scored only four runs in the series after averaging six through the first 16 games. Josh Reddick had an RBI single in the fourth and starting pitcher Tommy Milone (3-1) allowed eight hits and six runs – four earned – over 6 2/3 innings for Oakland.

Roberts singled and Ben Zobrist doubled with one out to ignite a three-run first inning for Tampa Bay. Roberts scored when Reddick dropped a fly ball in right field for an error, Zobrist came home on a bases-loaded hit batsman and Kelly Johnson’s sacrifice fly capped the rally.

Escobar lined his first homer since being acquired from Toronto in the offseason into the right-field stands in the second for a 4-0 lead. Oakland left the bases loaded in the fifth and the Rays added two more in the seventh, highlighted by an RBI double from Roberts, for a 6-1 lead.
