Recap

Nationals 6, Reds 3: Dan Haren turned in six solid innings and Bryce Harper homered as Washington won its third straight over visiting Cincinnati.

Haren (2-3) allowed two runs and six hits in his longest outing of the season and opened the scoring with an RBI single in the second. Denard Span added two hits and an RBI and Ian Desmond drove in a run for the Nationals, who will try to complete the four-game series sweep on Sunday.

Shin-Soo Choo homered but Mike Leake (1-1) only lasted three innings in the start for the Reds, allowing four runs (three earned) and six hits to suffer the loss.

Leake issued a pair of walks in the second before yielding Haren’s two-out single to right. Span followed with a single to center to make it a 2-0 gap and Washington piled on with two more runs in the third.

Harper connected in the fourth, belting a 1-2 cutter from Alfredo Simon into the stands in right for his ninth homer. Cincinnati closed to within 6-3 on Todd Frazier’s RBI single in the seventh but Drew Storen worked a scoreless eighth and Rafael Soriano struck out a pair in a perfect ninth for his seventh save.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Reds LF Chris Heisey (hamstring) left the game in the third inning. He was replaced by Xavier Paul. … Harper’s homer gave him 18 RBIs for the month, setting a franchise record for April. … Leake had gone at least six innings in each of his previous four starts this season and had surrendered a total of two runs in 14 innings over his last two turns.
